Shadow’s Forever Home:
An Adoption Journey

A fluffy, solid black kitten with golden yellow eyes rested on his favorite perch just outside the entrance to Seth Elementary School. It was a warm, sunny day, without a cloud in the flawless blue sky. As the students passed, many stopped to pet him—a pat on the head here, a scratch under the chin there.

“Oh, he’s SOOOOO cute!” one girl exclaimed.

“MEOW!” the kitten cried. Although she couldn’t understand him, what he really wanted her to hear was, “If you think I’m cute, take me home with you. Please!”

“I really like cats, but my mom won’t let me have one,” one young boy pouted as he passed the kitten.

With a sad face and a pitiful sigh, the fluffy black kitten with golden eyes gave up on finding anyone at the school to take him home. He began the long trek downtown hoping for something to eat.

Will Shadow ever realize his dream of a loving family, a warm bed, and plenty of healthy food? Discover for yourself, in this early chapter book just for developing readers. With adorable black and white interior illustrations by artist Barbara Gadsby to bring Shadow’s story to life, too.

About the Author

Sandra Biersdorfer, a native of East Texas, has been an avid reader since childhood. Some of her favorite books are the Nancy Drew mysteries and The Little House on the Prairie series. She lives in Katy, TX near Houston and enjoys working as a professional pet sitter, which gives her fodder for future tales of tails to be told. Her first children’s book, Nana’s Banana, was originally published in 2014 followed by The Kitty with the Itty-Bitty Tail and Papa’s Pumpkin. Sandra enjoys reading, writing, watching movies and game shows, and spending time with family and friends including her two grown children. Her son is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University while her daughter, also an SFA graduate, is in education in Katy ISD.

About the Illustrator

While life took her in other directions, she never lost her love of art. In addition to illustrating children’s books, Barbara also does pastel painting. Although she prefers to paint things she finds in nature, she finds inspiration in nearly everything.

It’s a Great Day to Celebrate with True Stories about Overcoming…Check Out These Selections from WCY Books

Today Joseph R. Biden was declared the winner of the U.S. presidential election, and is therefore slated to become our 46th president. For most of us who work so tirelessly for stronger rights for our animal friends, the environment, and humans of all creeds and colors, this development is widely hailed as a positive.

In fact, people are celebrating in the streets of our cities, and one can almost feel the lightening of a national darkness.

When fighting for the animals, activists often find themselves on the wrong side of the law, while animal abusers continue the abuse with impunity. Who Chains You Books brings you two true tales of these very struggles, and highlights the work rescuers and activists must take on, often behind the scenes, in order to carry out their mission for the animals.

Today is a great day to celebrate by choosing a story of overcoming on behalf of the animals and those who fight for them!

When dog activist Tamira Thayne and her nonprofit purchased Michael Vick’s dogfighting compound and set out to transform it to a dog rescue facility, it was widely seen as a fitting end for something heinous and unthinkable.

Yet, little did Tamira know the challenges were just beginning, as she ran headlong into the very corruption that made the county a perfect choice to house Vick’s operation.

It Went to the Dogs: How Michael Vick’s Dogfighting Compound Became a Haven for Rescue Pups is available in paperback, hardcover, audiobook, and kindle; you can even purchase autographed copies, a great holiday gift for the dog lover in your life. Find all your choices at this link: http://whochainsyou.com/wtd.html

A dog rescuer in Forks Washington positions himself as a hero for the animals, even traveling the country to gather more dogs for his nonprofit. But the ugly truth eventually surfaces, and—facing threats of lawsuits—law enforcement fails to protect the animals. It’s left up to various groups of animal rescues and activists, working in tandem, to bring the facts to the surface and find a way to win the day for these suffering dogs.

I Once Was Lost: Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary Rescue is available in paperback, kindle, and audiobook. Find links here: https://www.amazon.com/Once-Was-Lost-But-Found/dp/194604413X/

We hope you’re celebrating with us today. The animals need us, and a government who sees kindness as a positive trait is a great first step toward gaining their freedom.

The Eclipse Dancer

By Laura Koerber

Andy thought of flying. She imagined the air under her arms, her hair lifting and floating. She felt her heartbeat separate from the faraway beat and form its own rhythm: light, quick, a dancing thrum. When she opened her eyes, her yard was dusky and her mood had lightened.

She let her gaze drift across the darkening landscape. Andy’s heart filled with exultation. She raised her arms, fanned out her fingers, and arched her feet until she was on her toes.

She was assaulted by memories. Her mother was dying, and Danny had been dead for years. Her daughter was in Minneapolis, and Alana was up in the North Woods someplace. All of her childhood friends—the fairies, Hairy, Mr. Tolliver, and Kenshi—were gone.

Is it true that childhood is never overcome? “I have changed,” she whispered.

The light exploded into a ring of fire in a black sky: total eclipse.

She gently rose up into the warm, dark air and began to dance.
