New Dual Biography Features Environmental Activist James Phillips and Animal Activist Steve Hindi

Introducing

The Fox Feats and Shark Tales of Pollution Fighter James F. Phillips and Animal Rights Warrior Steven O. Hindi

by Pauline Marie Gambill

The FOX FEATS and SHARK TALES of Pollution Fighter James F. Phillips and Animal Rights Warrior Steven O. Hindi is an extensive and absorbing look at the lives and achievements of two courageous and fearless individuals: James F. Phillips (1930-2001), known as “the Fox;” and Steven Hindi, founder of the animal rights organization SHARK (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness).

The book delves into the early lives of Phillips and Hindi and looks at what drove them to a fierce and relentless dedication to their causes. Their journeys were not without serious and dangerous obstacles, and—in Hindi’s case—even resulted in physical injury. In addition to the telling of the men’s intriguing histories, visual images provide an important peek into their lives and work.

A Baby Calf is Born to the Rodeo—Can She Get Free? from author Tamira Thayne

Raffy Calfy’s Rescue

Animal Protector Series Vol. 3

by Tamira Thayne
Illustrated by C.A. Wulff

RCR illus7lo

The calf plopped to the ground, looking as grumpy as she felt. She had energy to spare, but nowhere to run and no one to play with. She was trapped! Her mom let out an amused snort, and then licked her little snout clean.

Suddenly there was a commotion in the barn, and a loud braying sent her scurrying under her mother, cowering and shaking. “What’s that noise?” The sound grew louder. Raffy peered through a gap in the wooden fence and saw a huge brown beast, with shiny fur and black trimmings on his feet and face.

“It’s a horse, honey,” replied Momma. Here at the Lazy M Rodeo Company, stories were passed from pen to pen about how the horses helped the humans rope baby cows for “fun and entertainment”; but it sure wasn’t fun for the calves, or their mothers who lowed in frustration as their babies were pulled from their sides.

Over the next few days, Raffy Calfy, Momma Cow, and Serge the horse developed a friendship, even making up silly jokes and playing tricks on one another. Finally, the time came for Serge to tell Rhonda and Raffy all about the rodeo, and the dangers it held for cows and calves.

Was all hope lost? Would Raffy and Momma Cow ever make it to the meadow? Find out in Raffy Calfy’s Rescue, The Animal Protector Series Vol. 3. The book and the Animal Protector Series is perfect for ages 8 and up, and includes a vocab builder and lesson starter questions, too.

Testimonial

”An emotionally-gripping story that will leave you with tears of joy, but also an eerie sense of the reality for animals used in entertainment. So often we fall into the trap of only seeing the world through our own lens; this story gives us the opportunity to see the world of the rodeo from a different point of view. Through Raffy, Rhonda, and Serge’s tale, we discover that what may seem like entertainment to us is misery for the animals.”—Brece Clark, the Humane Cowboy

Now Available, in time for the Holidays!

The Eclipse Dancer

By Laura Koerber

Andy thought of flying. She imagined the air under her arms, her hair lifting and floating. She felt her heartbeat separate from the faraway beat and form its own rhythm: light, quick, a dancing thrum. When she opened her eyes, her yard was dusky and her mood had lightened.

She let her gaze drift across the darkening landscape. Andy’s heart filled with exultation. She raised her arms, fanned out her fingers, and arched her feet until she was on her toes.

She was assaulted by memories. Her mother was dying, and Danny had been dead for years. Her daughter was in Minneapolis, and Alana was up in the North Woods someplace. All of her childhood friends—the fairies, Hairy, Mr. Tolliver, and Kenshi—were gone.

Is it true that childhood is never overcome? “I have changed,” she whispered.

The light exploded into a ring of fire in a black sky: total eclipse.

She gently rose up into the warm, dark air and began to dance.

How HumaneEducator.com Uses WCY Children’s Books in Its Educational Programs

Debbie and book

Humane Educator Debbie Gladwin with “Slow Moe”, by April Pedersen

Who Chains You Books loves to feature humane educators using our books in their programs. We asked Debbie Gladwin, founder of HumaneEducator.com, about her work for the animals and children, and how she finds our books useful. Here’s what she told us:

As a Certified Humane Education Specialist, I am always on the hunt for books with a humane education theme. At HumaneEducator.com, we often use animal themed literature. There is a unique bond between young people and animals that helps us to communicate empathy, compassion and respect for other living beings.

In our Bella’s Backyard Buddies program, we use many of the books published by Who Chains You Publishing. Books like Happy Dog: From Chained to Cherished, Sloe Moe: A Snail Tale and Doodle Bugs Second Chance are a part or our literature curriculum. They are perfect for read-alouds and compassion circle discussions. We have created art projects, writing activities, puzzles and games…all based on these animal-themed books.

We’ve created a body of curriculum based in part on the books and use them in a variety of environments like classrooms, after school programs, and service learning projects. These books make it easy for us to create activities that meet state academic standards and can easily be blended into an existing curriculum.

Rescue Dog Photo

Debbie’s rescue pups waiting for their bedtime story!

They are also great for family time reading at home. I’ve been known to read these books to my own rescue dogs!

What I love about Who Chains You Books as part of our program is watching the faces of the audience of young people light up as they listen to the stories of compassion and caring. They want to help.

allbooks-lo

We love that the heroes and heroines of these inspirational books are compassionate and respectful activists who are role models for the young people we teach. We also love that the stories are about all kinds of animals…dogs, cats, horses…but goats, pigs, rats, mice, snails and birds too!

At HumaneEducator.com, we strive to provide young people with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills that will help them to make informed lifestyle choices. We help them to understand critical issues like animal abuse in a way that will help them to see that they can be a part of the solution instead of the problem.

Located in central Oklahoma, our mission is to empower students to understand the effect that their actions have on other people, animals and the environment. We give them the tools and skills they’ll need to make responsible lifestyle choices. In addition, we provide parent/caregiver training that empowers them to help the children in their lives to live with kindness, empathy and compassion. We partner with schools and individual educators to enable them to incorporate humane education principles into their existing academic curriculum and school culture.

Currently, we have three projects—Bella’s Backyard Buddies is our humane education literacy program. HumaneEducator.com is our character education program and BullyCrisis.com is our program designed to empower kids to be upstanders against bullying.

When I am not creating curriculum, searching for new ideas or attending events, I love spending time with my husband and three rescue fur babies. Charlie and Bella are my two senior dogs and Catboy is my senior cat who were all rescued while we were living in Southern California. My personal life goal is to partner with people, especially children, to help them to discover their own skills and talents and how they can use them to live socially responsible lives.

If you are interested in further information about our humane education programs, please contact us at any one of our websites: HumanEducator.com, BellasBackyardBuddies.com or BullyCrisis.com.

—Debbie Gladwin, founder, humaneeducator.com

humaneed-lo

P.S. We LOVE working with humane educators! We’ve created some amazing books—featuring animals and issues that haven’t been addressed elsewhere—but we partner with those doing the work in the field to bring the animals’ voices to the children. That’s why we always offer wholesale discounts for humane educators and nonprofits. Check out our program for humane educators here, http://whochainsyou.com/humane-ed.html, and drop us a line if you have other ideas for projects we can do together at info@whochainsyou.com.

How About a Second Helping of Rescue Smiles? “More Rescue Smiles”, Out Today!

MoreRScover18lo-dropOut Today!

Last Year’s Rescue Smiles Won “Best Book, Human Animal Bond”, from the Dog Writers Association of America.

Now You Can Get a Second Helping of Happy Ending Rescue Stories from Who Chains You Books.

Praise for the first dose of Rescue Smiles:

FIVE STARS. Rescue Smiles is a truly great, feel good book. The collection of short stories are all well done and pulled me right in. I really enjoyed hearing these various real-life tales about good-hearted people taking in and often saving animals in great need. Each story moves swiftly and they are all tightly written. Several times I was quite surprised at how deeply they moved me.

“These days it seems like there’s bad news everywhere. This book directly counteracts all that. It’s all good news. It gave me a lift just reading it. If you’re an animal lover, you will devour this book. I did and I’ve no doubt that I’ll read it again.”—Scott, July 29, 2018, Amazon.com

The heart of the animal rescue world lies in its stories—of freedom, of love, and of sacrifice by those who not only acknowledge but embrace the human-animal bond and its wondrous gifts.

In our second rescue story compilation, Who Chains You Books is pleased to share a glimpse into the emotional lives of animal rescuers and the living beings they hold close. Join us for another helping of heartwarming anecdotes, as Clancy triumphs, Tallulah escapes, Alex survives, and a host of other animals steal our hearts.

Through these stories, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look into the relationships between rescuers and not only dogs and cats, but horses, cows, pigs, birds, and even a ferret, in this delightful second installment of Rescue Smiles.

About the Book:

smidgeycover18lo-dropIt was a gorgeous summer day in Central Park, and Smidge and her brother Ridge had time to share one last adventure before it was time to grow up, as Mama Pidgey primly informed them. Yuk, where was the fun in that?!

Smidge slapped Ridge’s wing with hers. “Hey, you hungry? Wanna be real birds, and scavenge the park for seeds, or go see if Mrs. Laney is providing Pidgey Take-Out today?”

Ridge rubbed his belly. “Yum, Mrs. Laney’s for sure! Maybe she put out french fries again,” he grinned mischievously.

The two were so intent on their scramble for treats that when they heard the first squawks of protest, they assumed it was just a squabble over a savory morsel. Soon the cries became louder and more frantic, and more birds joined the chorus.

Finally realizing something wasn’t right, Smidge and Ridge looked up from their breakfast.

But it was too late—a black sack came down over their heads, engulfing them both and turning their world to darkness…
